Courage Community founder Carlana Stone
Carlana Stone, Founder of the Courage Community
For a teenager who had everything going for her, a life confined to a wheelchair may seem like some tragic ending. Just spend 5 minutes with Carlana Stone and you’ll believe her life is more of a fairytale. A fantastic journey that certainly hasn’t ended... but rather, just begun.
"Circumstances don’t define a person. Rather, they provide an opportunity for us to find out just what we’re made of and that’s when we begin to realize our true potential. That’s when our true Courage is revealed."
Stone was only 17, when a momentary lapse of judgment changed the course of her life forever. She got into a car with a friend who was driving drunk. Carlana lost the use of her legs, but never lost her adventurous spirit.
Carlana is a pilot. She also skydives and is a certified scuba diver. When she’s on the road, however, you’re more likely to see Carlana zipping around town on her Harley Davidson tryke, rather than her convertible Mustang.
Carlana doesn’t just embrace life, she yanks it around and takes it for a wild ride. Breaking stereotypes and challenging stigmas has become a way of life for Carlana.
"Carlana’s inspirational story reminds us of the fragility of life and how the entire course of our lives can forever change in a split second. In Never Give In, Never Give Up Carlana shares her intimate personal struggle as she came to grips with adversity and learned to soar as a true winner. Carlana offers us all a special gift of hope."

"Pay No Attention to Boundaries!"
Stone became the first wheelchair-wielding reporter for ABC in Miami, Florida. She is an Emmy-nominated television producer; and the acclaimed author of Never Give In, Never Give Up. Stone is a speaker who has given talks in venues all over the world. Carlana is also the founder of CourageCommunity.org, a non-profit organization integrating social networking with social activism. "With the single click of a button, each of us can now become a catalyst for positive change."

"We all fall down in life. It’s whether we get back up and what we do with it that shows COURAGE."
At 17, Carlana Stone was gorgeous, successful and seemed to have it all as a gymnast, a cheerleader and student body president. Then fate stepped in, and in a moment of bad judgment, she and her friends got into a car with a drunk driver.
So a talk with Carlana begins with "the chair." The open and frank discussion about the physical and emotional impact of her a life-altering moment immediately creates a sense of intimacy. But the chair does more than serve as a starting point; it allows the audience to connect to Carlana as someone with flaws and weaknesses just like them.
"We all feel paralyzed at some point in our lives...
physically AND emotionally."
"She [Carlana] was such an inspiration, so full of heart and was a fantastic addition to Oprah Winfrey's Big Give."

"I have seen my friend Carlana in action...a fireball of flowing hair, contagious enthusiasm and unstoppable courage. She is sassy and cool and regardless of the fact that her formerly perfect butt now rests in a wheelchair, Carlana exudes sex appeal. This is not just a story of turning points; it is a real life and death drama with transformation at its core.
Talk about claiming your life...Carlana has sole custody of hers; complete with all the pain and struggle that rerouted her picture-perfect life. She bypassed whining and went straight to winning with a daily commitment to living that challenges and inspires. I worked alongside her and knew Carlana’s influence would never leave me. Her journey will touch you and help you transform, too."

Q: Why did you decide to start this foundation? What was your motivation?
A: "After my legs were paralyzed, I really had to dig deep and redefine who I was. I refused to allow my circumstances to define me as a person.
I've confronted those seemingly insurmountable odds and overcome them... and I believe I'm better because of it.
"Today, I don't consider myself, paralyzed in any sense of the word. My wheelchair is not a constraint, rather it represents the greatest force in my life.
"I recognize what a critical role, my family, friends and community played in getting me to where I am today.
"The Courage Community represents a life-calling for me... I've learned in life we're all paralyzed in some way... or can be. But not everyone is as fortunate as i have been - to have that network of support to get me and my family through our toughest times.
"Therein lies the foundation for the Courage Community.
"I'm using what i've learned in life, to share with others and help initiate a movement that really motivates people to get involved and to care. I want to illustrate that giving isn't always something that drains you.
Giving can be as renewing for the giver as it is for the receiver."
